Toughened (tempered) glass is produced by heating standard annealed glass to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling its surface, a process that puts the outer layers into compression and the core into tension. The result is a pane that is several times stronger than untreated glass and, critically, one that fractures into small, relatively blunt granules rather than long dangerous shards if it does break. This is why Indian building codes and most architects specify toughened glass by default for doors, large windows, railings, partitions and any glazing at floor level or in high-traffic areas across residential and commercial projects in MP.
